Course-specific learning objectives

The Degree Course in Computer Systems, Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering aims to train engineers whose background is wide ranging, and who have adequate knowledge of the methodological aspects of the basic sciences and Computer Systems Engineering, with specific skills in Computer Systems Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications Engineering.
The overall objective of the degree course is to train engineers who are ready to enter the labour market immediately but also to continue his or her studies, being equipped with the appropriate educational foundations to acquire the ability to promote technological innovation and design complex systems.
The student's training programme, aimed at achieving the above-mentioned general objective, is spread over the three years as follows:
- The first year not only provides the necessary knowledge of mathematics and physics, appropriately tailored to the engineering sector, but also offers basic engineering subjects such as digital electronics, programming (both basic and object-oriented) and probabilistic methods for engineering.
- In the second year, the curriculum offers further mathematical analysis and physics, as well as ICT-related content such as electrical engineering and electronics, signals and systems, fundamentals of automatic controls and communication systems.
- The third year continues to build on the student's knowledge, beginning with an in-depth study of electronics and operating systems. The student can therefore choose a curriculum (transversal to varying degrees, depending on their inclinations and interests) and free-choice activities, and has the chance to participate in a placement/internship or take professionalising course units (all of which are activities that provide useful knowledge for entering the world of work).
The general objective of the degree course, mentioned above, is achieved through a training programme delivered through the curriculum described above, that is geared towards achieving the following more specific educational objectives.
- Solid preparation in the basic engineering disciplines acquired through training activities comprising course units in mathematical analysis, geometry and physics; these activities are mainly carried out in the first year of the course, however, in the case of mathematical analysis and physics, the preparation is completed by further course units in the second year as well. In the first year, students’ level B2 English language will also be tested.
- Wide-ranging training in the characterising disciplines of Information Technology Engineering, i.e. Computer Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications Engineering; students learn through educational activities in these three disciplines, delivered chiefly in the second and third year of the course.
- The acquisition of skills in related and integrative disciplines necessary to enrich the general preparation of the degree course graduate.
- In the third year, common characterising activities are taught in addition to a wide range of further characterising, related and integrative activities. Through the definition of the programme of study and potential free-choice activities, students, depending on their aptitudes and their intention to take a specific second-cycle degree course or enter the world of work, will be able to complete their education by tailoring it to the most appropriate disciplinary and applicative contexts in the fields of software systems engineering, automation, Internet of Things, analogue and digital electronics, electronics for industry and energy, telecommunications systems and networks, digital and multimedia communications.
- The third year is completed by student-choice training activities, the final examination and professionalising activities. Among the latter, the student can choose between internships in the laboratories of the Information Technology Engineering Division, internships in companies and organisations and professional training courses useful for entering the world of work.
Computer Systems, Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering graduates are also prepared for immediate entry into the world of work thanks to their flexibility and ability to keep their skills up to date. As mentioned, the degree course also provides the educational basis required to successfully pursue studies in all second-cycle degree course in the field of Information Technology Engineering.
The employability of three-year graduates is facilitated by the presence in the area of a large number of medium-sized and small companies that see graduates of Information Technology Engineering class degrees as indispensable technicians in their production processes.
