Learning objectives

The Student will acquire specific knowledge in the field of planning and design of transportation infrastructure and services with emphasis on road transport. Will be treated the technical and economic aspects that underlie the processes of investment in road infrastructure and intermodal transport that will allow it to operate or deal with related technical government or the management company.

Prerequisites

None for the students of the Master Degree Couse in Civil Engineering. Basic concept of highways engineering.

Course unit content

Fundamentals of transporation engineering with regard to the works and services for the mobility of people and goods. Parking area, barriers, intersections, crossing area. Design of infrastructural systems and economical evaluation of projects.

Full programme

Transport systems; land, water and air transport systems; interchanges and intermodality.
Transport systems schematization: transport network and representative graph; study of transport demand.
Evaluation of investments in transport systems: definition and quantification of costs in transport systems; evaluation of investments in transport systems; design levels of public works under the new public procurement code.
Roads and road users: consistency of the road network in Italy; the Human-Vehicle-Road-Environment system.
Road categories and related traffic: the cross-sectional study and road categories; network levels and road hierarchy; road traffic and related indicators.
The capacity of a road: the theoretical capacity of a road; levels of service and possible capacity (Basic Freeway Segment); the correct possible capacity (Basic Freeway Segment); levels of service and possible capacity (Two Lane Highway); the correct possible capacity (Two Lane Highway).
Road intersections: definitions and elementary maneuvers; conflict points and visibility triangles; type classification and levels of service; design of characteristic elements.
Roundabout-type road intersections: definitions and basic geometric elements; functional verification and capacity formulations of compact solutions.
Altimetrically staggered roadway intersections: turning maneuvers and ramps; operating schemes and classic types.
Road restraints: safety barriers and logic of operation; safety barrier design; criteria for selection of barriers and crash dissipators.
Road markings. Road markings: road marking materials; some installation rules.
Infrastructure for intermodal freight transport: unitized cargo; handling systems; complex single-mode transport.
Concrete road and industrial pavements: types, functions and construction of concrete pavements; joints and specification requirements; execution aspects and functional verifications; expeditious structural verifications for industrial areas.
The removal of water from the roadbed: effects of water on the functional and structural degradation of pavements. Winter road maintenance: weather and emergency information management; activations of technological measures.
