Integrated course unit module: FILM HISTORY AND CRITICISM

Learning objectives

The course develops a path through the history of Italian cinema, in particular within the Italian comedy genre and more specifically focuses on the films released in theaters in 1963, a turning point in national film production. The course aims to provide students with the necessary tools to acquire the ability to understand and critically analyze the audiovisual text.

Course unit content

The course deals with a specific path on Italian cinema on the "Italian Comedy" genre and in particular focuses on a fundamental date: 1963.
The in-depth analysis of this cinematographic genre, and of a symbolic date, 1963, which saw the release of some masterpieces of Italian cinema including "Il Gattopardo", "8 e 1/2", "Ieri, oggi, domani", "Le mani sulla città", "Ro.Go.PA.G." and others, is an opportunity to reflect on various themes related to the history of Italian cinema:
- the Italian film industry in the post-war period - production
-the authors
-the screenwriters
- national film stardom, with particular attention to the female stardom of the time.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons. During the lessons the topics of the course will be discussed in detail and some films will be shown in the cinema (the screenings are an integral part of the course). Furthermore, at the beginning of the lessons, a list of films to be seen in order to pass the exam will be provided. The lessons will be structured with the aim of stimulating students to compare and debate the topics covered in the classroom. Furthermore, the course material will be available on the Elly platform where it will also be possible to consult the list of films to be seen in order to pass the exam.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam will be oral and aimed at verifying the ability to understand and learn the texts in the program and the audiovisuals indicated for passing the exam. The evaluation criteria will be linked to the degree of satisfaction with respect to the aforementioned parameters.
Students who do not attend regularly will refer to what is indicated in the bibliography/exam filmography.
An assessment of insufficiency is determined by the lack of knowledge of

the minimum contents of the course. A sufficient evaluation (18-23/30) is determined by an acceptable level of preparation by the student of the evaluation indicators listed above; the average scores (24-27/30) are assigned to the student who demonstrates a more than sufficient (24- 25/30) or good (26-27/30) level of the assessment indicators listed above, the highest scores ( from 28/30 to 30/30 cum laude) are assigned based on the demonstration of a very good to excellent level.
