Integrated course unit module: MOLECULAR AND APPLIED BIOLOGY

Learning objectives

To know, understand and be able to discuss the main molecular aspects underlying the transmission of genetic information and the regulation of gene expression.

Prerequisites

Basis of chemistry, organic chemistry and cell biology.

Course unit content

The course provides basic knowledge of molecular aspects on the flow of genetic information according to the scheme of the "central dogma of biology." Initially, the structure of nucleic acids, and their function are introduced. Next, the molecular mechanisms underlying the processes of DNA replication, RNA transcription and protein translation are presented. The concept of DNA mutability will also be introduced, and cellular DNA damage repair systems will be briefly presented.

Full programme

Structure and function of nucleic acids. Organization of DNA in the eukaryotic cell, chromatin structure, chromosomes, genes. DNA replication: molecular mechanisms and enzymes. Types of RNA involved in protein synthesis: structures and functions. Transcription of mRNA: molecular mechanisms and enzymes. Post-transcriptional maturation of eukaryotic mRNA. Genetic code and its properties. Translation of mRNA into protein: molecular machinery and mechanisms. DNA damage, mutations, DNA repair mechanisms of the cells.

Teaching methods

The course will be held on-site and will make use of powerpoint presentation, cartoon animation and video aimed at supporting the that the comprehension of molecular interaction underlying the processes of replication, transcription and translation. During the lectures, students will be solicited to intervene constructively and interactively. The material presented during the lecture will be made available to students on the Elly platform.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment for grading will take into account the degree of knowledge of the topics and the skill and the fluency of the student to expose and discuss them, in addition to the student's ability to logically think, and to adopt the proper scientific language. Students with SLD/SEN must first contact the CAI office of the University of Parma (https://www.unipr.it/ugov/organizationunit/225942).
