Course units and programme of study

The programme of study is the set of compulsory and elective course units that the student must take in order to graduate.

Submission of the programme of study for your year of enrolment is compulsory and is required, in particular, for registration for examinations and for completion of the teaching evaluation questionnaires.
All current students must submit their programme of study online via the Esse3 system.

The programme of study may differ according to the academic year of enrolment ('cohort'); it may also provide for a choice between different study paths ('curricula').

To see the list of course units that you can include in your programme of study, select the academic year of enrolment and, if available, the curriculum.

How the programme of study works

The list of course units in the programme of study represents all the training activities available for each of the years of the degree course and changes according to the year in which the student enrols. ‘Free-choice or restricted-choice' course units are optional learning activities that students may include in their programme of study according to the choice criteria specified on this page; the remaining course units are compulsory for all students.

The programme of study must be submitted online by the student for each year using the ESSE3 system (see dedicated section).

Students are allowed to submit their own programme of study with options other than those presented on this page (and available in ESSE3), as long as it is consistent with achieving the course's learning objectives. In that case, the programme must be submitted to the Course Council for approval.

Course catalogue a.y. 2024/2025 - 'Free-choice' activities

With regard to the optional activities (TAF D) in the second and third years of the programme of study, students may choose:

1) Courses offered by the DEGREE COURSE;

3) TRANSVERSAL ACTIVITIES

4) FREE PARTICIPATION ACTIVITIES

It is possible to include in one's programme of study ‘free participation activities’: sporting, cultural, artistic or social activities, provided that they are certified in accordance with the provisions of the ‘Rules for Free Participation Activities’, for at least and no more than 6 ECTS credits. If the certification of these activities, considered as a whole, does not reach 6 ECTS credits, the credits certified will remain in the student's career as a supernumerary, without covering an activity under TAF D.

5) NATIONAL CIVIL SERVICE
Students who have carried out National Civil Service may, if they expressly request it, have it recognised with 6 ECTS credits as an activity chosen by the student. For recognition, an application must be made by filling in the FORM and attaching appropriate certification. The Course Council will authorise the recognition.

6) INTERNSHIP

(N.B. No authorisation is required for the inclusion in the programme of study of the courses/activities listed in the previous points)

7) Course units offered by other DEPARTMENTS (not expressly recommended by the Degree Course)

Students may also propose the inclusion of courses other than those proposed by the Degree Course, provided that they are activated for at least 6 ECTS credits, on other university degree courses. In this case, the FORM must be completed at least five days before the meeting of the Course Council prior to the end of the period available for the online upload of programmes of study. Students must indicate the reasons for their choice and the Course Council will assess, on a case-by-case basis, the consistency of the proposed choice with the programme of study and, if consistent, will authorise the Student Registry Office to include the chosen course in the programme of study, in time for it to be uploaded online.

Online completion of the Programme of study - ESSE3

Every year, within a set period, regularly enrolled students (i.e. completing their course within the prescribed time) must fill in their programme of study on Esse3 for their course year.
The online submission of the programme of study is compulsory and necessary, above all, for registering for examinations and for completing the course evaluation questionnaires.

Instructions for students not completing the course within the prescribed time

Year-3 students must pay close attention to their choice in the final year.
Students NOT COMPLETING THE COURSE WITHIN THE PRESCRIBED TIME, if they wish to change a free-choice activity, must enrol in the 3rd year as a REPEATING STUDENT.

This means that:

  • the repeating student must wait until the first useful session of the academic year (July) in order to graduate;
  • as in other years, before taking examinations for new course units, students must acquire attendance (i.e. wait until the end of the semester of the course to be able to take the examination);
  • students will be enrolled in the current system for year-3 students. Therefore, the student will have to follow a new system, with the obligation to take core examinations not provided for in their original system.

In order to facilitate third-year students, an additional period in which it is possible to modify choices and/or the internship (in May) has been introduced.

STUDENTS NOT COMPLETING THE COURSE WITHIN THE PRESCRIBED TIME may NOT fill in the programme of study online.
See rule described in the notice above.

STUDENTS WITH CONDITIONAL ENROLMENT
Students with conditional enrolment may NOT fill in their programme of study either online or on paper.

STUDENTS ENROLLED ON A DEGREE COURSE CLOSED TO NEW CANDIDATES
Students enrolled on a degree course closed to new candidates (Degree Course in Political Science and European Institutions - SPIE, Degree Course in Political Science (Businesses, Markets, Institutions) - SPAMI) are NOT required to submit a programme of study.

Guidelines for the recognition of extracurricular ECTS credits

EXTRACURRICULAR activities are activities (course units, participation in seminars, competitions, etc.) which are not recognised for the qualification of Degree. These kinds of activities cannot replace "elective" teaching of the program of study and the possible evaluation does not average with the marks of the other examinations.

Extracurricular credits may be:

1. EXTRACURRICULAR LESSONS, in addition to the other program of study’s course units.

Students may include in their study plan, in addition to the planned courses, up to a maximum of 2 extra-curricular courses per year. The student must send a reasoned request to the Degree Council, filling in the form for Application for inclusion of extracurricular teaching in the program of study of Political Science Course

2. RECOGNITION OF EXTRACURRICULAR ECTS CREDITS, for extracurricular activities authorized by the Degree Council.

 During the academic year, the Degree Council decides on the recognition of extra-curricular credits for students who attend certain specific seminars.

Students do not have to apply for this recognition. The seminar organizer provides the list of participants to the Course President, the Degree Council will authorize the Student Registry Office to include the extra-curricular credits in the students' careers.

3. RECOGNITION OF EXTRACURRICULAR ECTS CREDITS for extracurricular activities (such as seminars, diplomatic simulations, etc.) NOT authorized beforehand by the  Degree Council.

Students must request authorization before performing the activity, filling out the following form.

N.B. The Degree Council may, on request, appoint a supervisor to evaluate the student’s work.
